Jordan Named to the New York Farm Bureau’s
2009 “Circle of Friends”
Assemblyman Tony Jordan (R,C-Jackson) today was pleased to announce that he has been named to the New York Farm Bureau’s 2009 “Circle of Friends,” an award given to recognize individual lawmakers who support the state’s agriculture and Farm Bureau initiatives. Jordan is one of 84 legislators to make this year’s list, which is based on each lawmaker’s voting record on issues of importance to the state’s agricultural community as well as other legislative actions, including sponsorship of pro-agriculture legislation.
“Living and working in this region, it’s hard not to understand the importance of agriculture and farming to the region and our economy as a whole– especially when your wife comes from a family of dairy farmers,” said Jordan. “I’ve worked hard to make sure that we provide farmers with the type of support afforded to other industries, and I will continue to stand up for our agriculture community. As we saw last year, with the farmworker labor bill, which would effectively endanger the future of the family farm in New York, some legislators don’t understand the role that farming plays in a healthy economy.”
Jordan worked tirelessly during his first session to secure five state grants to keep five farms in the 112th district in operation as well as funding to offset depreciating dairy prices throughout the state. Jordan spoke out against the farmworker labor bill, fails to recognize the uniqueness of the agricultural industry and would have harmed the very workers it sought to protect.
“I want to thank the New York Farm Bureau for this award,” concluded Jordan. “It’s a real honor.”
